AstraZeneca's new heartburn treatment, Prilosec, is based on a similar strategy and has a similar price tag, though the exact mechanism of action is yet to be determined.

The study authors note that Prilosec is an expensive drug that can be used for years and has been used by millions of people in the past. But the drug's side effects are often the result of poor treatment. They include diarrhea, flatulence and the loss of appetite.

AstraZeneca said it has not received any reports of heartburn side effects and no cases of gastrointestinal bleeding that have been reported in patients taking PPIs.
